The 3 Keys to Happiness

Guest post by Cheryl Nordyke
The definition of happiness according to the dictionary is: [hap-ee-nis] –noun
1. the quality or state of being happy.
2. good fortune; pleasure; contentment; joy.
There are countless books, blogs, theories and opinions on what happiness is and how to attain it. Some focus on wealth, some on inner peace. Others focus on your relationships or possibly what you do for a living. There are a variety of thoughts on happiness and how to attain and maintain it. However, I think I may have found the answer.
I know you are thinking, “not possible,” however consider these three things if you would:
1. How many people throughout history have had everything and still seemed unhappy, even to the point of taking their life? Then there are individuals that we have met that don’t have everything yet seem to be in a constant state of happiness. If knowledge of situations can only make you unhappy, then it stands to reason that our thoughts and knowledge of situations and things can make us unhappy. Likewise, if someone says something that makes me happy or laugh, then my thoughts made that happen. Therefore, our thoughts are ultimately responsible for our happiness. If we go within ourselves and get to know what we have control over and what we can change to allow us to be happy, then we have the first key.
2. I believe the second key to happiness is related to how we spend our time. If we spend the majority of our time doing something we don’t like, this ultimately affects our happiness. If we are unable to change what we do, can we find something about what we are doing that makes us happy? When we can find something we love and do that or find something to love about what we do, then this can expand our happiness. We now have the second key.
3. Ultimately, happiness is also about the life we live. Are we who we want to be? Do we spend our time doing things we enjoy? Are we around individuals who bring out a better version of ourselves? When we take responsibility for our lives we now have the power to change our life. This way, we have the ability to live our best life, giving us the 3rd and final key.
To sum it all up: “The secret to your happiness is to look within. Do what you love. Live your best life.”
