Thankful for This Moment

Guest post by Amber Rae Lambke - adapted from her original post on March 20th.

I’m on the R train sitting across from a younger blind woman who is breathtakingly gorgeous. She sits with poise and confidence, wearing a radiant smile, her arm clasped around a handsome man who I assume to be her husband. Her smile is the type that draws you in and is difficult to turn from. It has me equally captivated and deep in thought…

I can’t help but wonder… has she always been blind? My inclination is no, though beyond my instincts and personal biases, I have no sound justification as to why.

If she hasn’t always been blind, when and how did this happen?

In this moment I immediately feel this deep sense of sadness as I imagine what life would be like without sight… and having to often rely on others.

As a visual person, I live to see the world. Those who know me well would say I walk around with childlike wonder and adoration for the sights around me. And being very independent, relying on others often makes me feel uneasy. Having this gift taken from me would be devestating.

I also can’t help but wonder - if she hasn’t always been blind - how long it took her to accept and adapt?

I think the key to happiness is acceptance… accepting what is as it is right now. For when we accept, we become at ease. We open ourselves to the possibility of happiness.

This moment reminds me to be thankful for the little things I have, right now, as they are… For my ability to see, for everything standing with me in this moment. Life can change at any moment but I remind myself of right now and I am at ease.
